5 Ways To Stay Motivated To Train During The Pandemic

Unfortunately, some of us are still in the midst of a pandemic, current practices and season schedules have been cut in half, postponed or cancelled. As a result, you’re required to train with little to no supervision on your own. Without teammates or coaches around, it may be difficult to motivate yourself to workout.  However, season or no season, you’re an athlete and you still need to train! Try these 5 ideas to help you push yourself when you’re working out solo.

5 Ways To Stay Motivated To Train During The Pandemic

  1. Remember Your Purpose. As an athlete you know there are a TON of powerful reasons you need to engage in a consistent exercise and training program. Maybe you need to work on speed or endurance. Perhaps you want to improve your ball handling skills or strengthen your core. Whatever you need to improve upon, now is the time to do it! What’s your purpose? Define it and get to work. When your team practice and season gets the green light you want to be ready.
  2. Find a Training Space.  As soon as you hit the gym or playing field  with your teammates you’re energized to practice and strengthen your skills. You have to take that same energy with you when you find a new place to train.  Even the simplest area in your home can serve as a visual cue that motivates you to work out with the same energy you have when you are with your teammates.  If the weather is nice, you might prefer to head outside in your yard or a local park. Wherever you choose to train, be consistent, bring a positive attitude and game intensity.
  3. Virtual Team Training. Get your teammates to connect via Zoom, Duo or conference call and workout together. While it’s not the same level of energy received when physically practicing together, the improvisation is still a motivating factor.
  4. Fight Boredom. Every week , switch your workouts around. This will help to avoid mental fatigue and you’ll challenge your body in new ways that will motivate you to continue to push yourself to reach your training goals.
  5. Track your progress. Use electronic fitness devices or a simple journal to help you evaluate and monitor your training. You can do this individually or as a team. Each small training victory can inspire you to stay motivated throughout the pandemic.

Know that you can get motivated to train consistently when you are by yourself. Plan ahead, make it fun, and tap into your internal source of motivation.
